In our world interpretation is defined as the sharing of New Zealand\u2019s\/Aotearoa\u2019s stories, in an&nbsp; innovative way with visitors.<\/p>\n<p>This involves a range of work which we have successfully undertaken for both private and public clients.<\/p>\n<p>Typically this work includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>researching, reviewing and writing <strong>Interpretation Plans <\/strong>to meet the &nbsp; requirements of DOC concessions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When Real Journeys (formerly Fiordland Travel) were developing their new Doubtful Sound product <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realjourneys.co.nz\/Main\/Doubtfuldaytime\/\">www.realjourneys.co.nz\/Main\/Doubtfuldaytime\/<\/a> they asked our advice on developing a new interpretation plan. The plan was based around requirements for flexibility, yet sought to follow the five step approach to entertaining visitors and sharing key interpretive stories.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>developing and delivering <strong>i<\/strong><strong>nterpretive staff training<\/strong> to meet industry based standards &#8211; Aviation Tourism, Travel, Training Organisation (ATTTO) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.attto.org.nz\/search\/node\/interpretation\">www.attto.org.nz\/search\/node\/interpretation<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When Black Cat Group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackcat.co.nz\/\">www.blackcat.co.nz<\/a> sought to improve their visitor experience, in both their Lyttelton and Akaroa operations, they wanted to base the training on national standards.<\/p>\n<p>We were able to broker a training agreement with ATTTO, design a training programme based on unit standards and deliver innovative training and work based place assessments.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>reviews <\/strong>of existing interpretation against best international practice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tranz Scenic operates scenic tourism based rail operations which offer excellent opportunities to engage visitors with the stories of New Zealand\/Aotearoa<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tranzscenic.co.nz\/\"> www.tranzscenic.co.nz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were asked to review the existing interpretation offer on the Overlander, Tranz Alpine and Tranz Coastal.<\/p>\n<p>Based on some gaps between the current offer, interpretive best practise and visitor expectations, we designed a new interpretation plan and implemented training programmes for staff.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interpretation developments using <strong>technology<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We (and almost all the research substantiates this) believe that much of the current interpretation fails to engage visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Appropriate technology can both serve to engage, entertain and inform visitors. Since that time he has continued to promote modern interpretation practices and apply fresh thinking to developing new approaches to engaging visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm has previously been awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to review Interpretation in North America and is a Fellow of the Executive Development Institute for Tourism at the University of Manoa (Hawaii). Malcolm has previously worked in Project Director, Managerial and General Manager roles for the Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre,&nbsp; Department of Conservation, Real Journeys, the Tourism Industry Association of NZ, the Mackenzie Heritage Centre, Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari and the Museum of Transport and Technology.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm is well known for both his former regional and national roles in developing units standards for Interpretation, iwi liaison, product development, resource management, DOC concessions, sustainability,&nbsp; expedition leading and guest lecturing, small business toolkits and the fore-runner (for the outdoor sector) to Qualmark.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm works nationally from his base overlooking the picturesque Akaroa Harbour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Associates<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Interpretation New Zealand works closely with national associates in the areas of feasibility studies, strategic planning, small business consultancy and graphic design.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About Interpretation New Zealand Interpretation NZ has had over twenty five years\u2019 experience in planning and delivering visitor experiences in New Zealand.
